Dear AOI Members,

As the 157th year of our organization begins, AOI and its members face a fourth wave of the Covid-19 virus outbreak. Despite the ravages of the pandemic and its challenge to every civic association that depends on fellowship and socialization among like-minded members, the Association of Oldest Inhabitants of D.C. has not only survived — we are thriving in the face of adversity.

More than two years ago, before many people knew what the word “covid” meant, your AOI Board of Directors was taking a forthright look at the future of the organization. Should we continue with the status quo, or strike out in new directions? The board wanted to know your views on the present, and your suggestions for the future, so board members drafted a survey which was sent to all members. The responses were gratifying and encouraging. Not only was the level of response very high, AOI members, almost without exception, also expressed their affection for, and loyalty to, the organization. You were willing not only to continue, but to innovate as well. And a gratifying number of members new and old said, “Yes, we are willing to step up and take a more active role in the association.”

Since then, AOI’s members have met the challenge of the times: we have held two very successful online membership meetings that elected new officers and directors and approved an AOI legacy program of annual grants to the Committee of 100 on the Federal City and the DC History Center, formerly the Historical Society of Washington DC. In addition, we resumed AOI’s signature membership event: our November and December monthly luncheon meetings, held both in person and online at the beautiful Women’s National Democratic Club, were successful by every measure.  (Please turn to page two.)

(Please detach, include this with your check and mail it to:  815 Woodside Pkwy., Silver Spring, MD 20910 OR you may also renew and donate via Zelle.  Just select aoiofdc@gmail.com and in the comment line note, “2022 Renewal.”  Any amount over $20 will be considered a donation. )

In January 2022, we face a fourth wave of the Covid-19 pandemic. The Board of Directors, with deep regret, canceled our much-anticipated New Year’s Day brunch. But we are continuing our programs—we had already planned a zoom-only program for February 17th, with Director of D.C. Public Libraries, Richard Reyes-Gavilan, as our tentatively-scheduled guest. Meetings will continue, either full zoom or hybrid as circumstances warrant, for the balance of the spring program, through June.

So now to the pitch: please renew your AOI membership for 2022! The year 2021 was dues-free, but we are now working to get back on track. Membership dues remain unchanged, still a bargain at $20 for a full year. And if you can make an additional donation to help fund the association’s ongoing efforts to support AOI’s mission, we’d be most appreciative.

Please renew now to save us the expense and aggravation of additional mailings and reminders.  I’ve included a pre-addressed envelope for your convenience. Thank you for your continued confidence in our organization AND for your financial support.
Sincerely yours,

Thomas Neale
